I have a major customer who's looking to bring a 4D 2003 database
over to v11. It's a pure 4D client-server database with about 70
concurrent users, about half of which access the database over ADSL.
Has anyone gone live with v11 on larger databases with numerous
client connections?
I have one that will roll out in February of 2009... however this is a
rewrite and not a conversion. As a rewrite I have been able to use all
of the new v11 features and coding techniques. Initial results show
that it performs good-enough over the WAN to go with a centralized
server (clients all over the country).
I will be able to tell you more once we go live.

Thanks to Steve and Neil for your input.
It seems like there aren't too many real world success stories yet...
or nobody's saying!
Does anyone / everyone think v11 is ready for the big time?

Hello,
We have converted our database this summer and it's currently in
production.
It's a big database (150 GB as for now) but with only 7/8 users, so our
experience may be of little interest for you.
We use 4D Server V11.2 on a local network (Gigabit Ethernet), to load,
transform and print photos.
Server is a Xserve 4*2,8 Ghz with 2 GB RAM and 1 TB HD.
Our main interest in V11 was the removal of 128 GB data file limit and
segment management.
It took me one month to manage the migration from 4D 2003 to V11,
including
extensive testing and load simulation.
The biggest problems I had were :
- during photo loading, memory usage kept growing until 4D crashed
A "write data cache" instruction every 100 pictures took care of this
one.
- a lot of fields and variables had a vertical bar as display format
after
conversion and showed only this bar on screen
I updated all of these to suppress the culprit
On the bright side:
-Performance is enhanced (loading photos, retrieval on big tables)
-Development environment iis a lot more comfortable
- New commands and functions in language are welcome
Otherwise, we upgraded a few Macs from 1 GB to 1,5 GB of RAM for 4D to
run
flawlessly (with 1 GB, we had frequent crashes). Our Macs all have Mac
OS X
10.4.11.
As for now, we are very satisfied with 4D V11 and are waiting on V11.3
for a
few minor bugs to disappear.
Hope this helps
