Hello again,
Has anyone got any advice for the best configuration of 4D v11 Web
Server on
4D Remote/Client?
I have found the following out after trial and error:
The default location for the webfolder is NOT as the manual says:
with 4D in remote mode, at the same level as that of the 4D .exe file
(under Windows) or the software package (under Mac OS).
But is actually put in the TEMPORARY folder as is the Logs folder which
contains the logweb.txt file. This is a little frustrating as you
would
have to remember to move these files out and back in again before a
forced
resource update. Personally I would never keep anything that I
consider to
be permanent in the TEMPORARY folder?
The web folder location can be set to an absolute value through the
preferences dialog but the logweb.txt location cannot be changed (as
far as
I can tell).
I would like to know of any other things I should look out for or any
advice
people have.
Regards, Dougie

I just found another issue with the Web Server running on 4D Remote in
v11.
The TRACE command seems to have no effect on the 4D Remote application
when
triggered via a web call. This was never the case (except for script
callbacks) in previous versions and makes debugging impossible with
this
configuration.
Am I missing something like a preference or database parameter or have
4D
decided that no one would ever want to debug an application I this
configuration?
This is a public list so I always refrain from using strong language
but the
air in my office has been blue since I started working with v11.
Every day we are finding 1 or 2 new problems. We have logged a few
but
simply do not have the time to be 4D's quality control team. This
after all
is not an open source project.
Regards, Dougie

I wish I could convince people to WAIT, WAIT, WAIT to go into
production with new versions of 4D, especially major releases like v11.
When we jump on a major release because we want the new features, we
are also jumping on the new bugs - of which there will be plenty.
If it were possible for you to go back to 2004, I would recommend that
you do it.
I know that the folks at 4D Inc don't like to hear this, but the
reality seems to be that v11 is not yet ready for production use. The
fact that the "v11 Success Story" thread only drew a couple of
positive responses is a clear indication of the real-world situation.
Interestingly, you are not helping 4D Inc when you put a buggy new
release into production. A buggy release does major damage to the
product among the end user base. For example, a buggy release BROUGT
DOWN D-Base, which was the desktop database behemoth at the time.
Their release was so bad that end users rebelled, and developers who
tried to insist on using the new release were quickly out of work. I
still vividly remember watching that debacle from the 4D world, and
being amazed at how far they fell, and how quickly.
So I would advise all 4D developers who are thinking of putting v11
into production right now to...Lie down until that feeling goes away.
Keep on testing and playing with v11 if you already are, but keep
rolling out 2004 for production until you can spend at least 2-3 weeks
working in v11 without finding new bugs.
That is best for you, best for your users, -- and yes, best for 4D Inc.
Think the Major Release Blues is unique to 4D? Well, just look at
Windows Vista, and some of the Mac OS releases.

Walt,
I completely agree with what you are saying and have lived to those
rules
for the last few releases. Here was my thinking behind the decision
to jump
early this time.
I waited and waited for a stable release that I could migrate existing
apps
from 2003 to 2004. In reality I only made that move early 2008 and
have
still only moved 80% of my clients systems over. 2004 still gives me
pain
in certain areas. With the withdrawal of 2003 support it was no
longer an
option for me to use that for a new project although I was very
tempted.
So it was either use 2004 with the problems I know about or jump to
v11. 4D
have been saying that they are working to a 12 to 18 month major
release
cycle and have said on more than one occasion that v12 will be released
before the end of 2009. This means no more support for 2004 in a
little
over a year!
This was ultimately the scary thought that pushed me towards my
decision.
Your story is interesting. Where were 4D while D-Base were
struggling?
Were they active in helping them with their issues or watching?
Anyhow I apologise for my moan the other day. I am in now and need to
get
on with the job. On the plus side:
I have replaced ALP in my app by using list boxes which in turn has
reduced
code and increased stability.
Climbway (based in Belarus) have worked very hard over the past few
months
to get me a working version of 4DOutlook Plugin and 4DOffice Plugin
for v11
for which I am truly grateful.
Regards, Dougie
